The development of multilingual dictionaries and especially those conceived to ensure the translation of terms from a specialized language, whose interpretation should be unambiguous, is usefully supported by the preliminary realization of a thesaurus of concepts, having a language-independent semantic structure. This structure has to be subtle enough to ensure the perception of pertinent senses for the domain of use, thus making possible the identification of the concept by its semantic vicinity.
The elaboration of a concept thesaurus is especially recommended and useful for the development of an internationally standardized terminology, selected and defined by working groups of experts, because the specific idiom of an exact or technical science uses more clearly delimited concepts, created by specialists and generally defined by them, a fact that facilitates the semantic work.
Taking into account the continuous process of perfecting some specialized technical vocabularies (by adding new terms and updating old chapters), the elaboration and actualization of the associated concept thesaurus should become a continuous and correlated process, in order to ensure a direct access to this thesaurus of the experts who draw up the new chapters.
The expertise acquired in the elaboration of the IEC Thesaurus allowed us to propose some structures adequate to a multilingual thesaurus of technical concepts, as a modern instrument of the semantic analysis of the internationally standardized terminology.
The setting up of such instruments of analysis and survey of the specialized
terminology should be a priority concern for the Romanian Academy,
designated to develop fundamental researches in all knowledge domains and first of
all in the language one.
