Travel - getting to Bucharest

Bucharest has reasonable connections with most European capitals. For departures outside Europe or the Middle East, flight connections are needed.

The city is reached by a large number of low-costs flights, mainly from destinations in Italy and Spain as well as from some major cities in Germany, France, the UK, Belgium, Hungary, Turkey, Austria, Israel, etc.

All flights land at Henri Coandă International Airport (IATA: OTP), located in Otopeni, 18 km north of downtown. Henri Coanda airport is often referred to as Otopeni on airline bookings, because of its location.

From airport to city center

There are several options to get from Henri Coandă airport to Bucharest. However, we strongly recommend the express bus 783, which goes from the airport to downtown Bucharest. It runs approximately every 20 minutes, daily, including weekends and holidays (every 40 minutes during the night). Timetable for departures from Henri Coandă Airport to the city center is available here. For the Romanian Academy Library, you get out at Piata Romana stop.

Expect the bus trip to be about 30 minutes long (or even longer during rush hour traffic).

If you take the 783 bus, you'll probably have to ask for some help figuring out the tickets, stops, and how to reach the hotel.

To get a cab, you need to order one from the electronic kiosk available right at the exit after the baggage belts and customs (yes, that crowded place where people wait for the travellers). Beware that not all taxi companies offer the same price per km! Take your receipt from the kiosk, go out to the curb, and wait for the taxi with your number to arrive in about 3 to 5 minutes. Each cab has a little 3 or 4 digit number on the side, different from its license plate number, often in an oval but not always. You have to select a cab company at the kiosk, and look for a cab from that company. All cabs have meters. It should be about 25 lei to Piața Romană. The driver probably won't speak English.

Beware of pickpockets!

On the airport

Sometimes you have to pick up baggage (ADVICE: lock or wrap it! as baggage handlers may have sticky fingers) on a lower level than the main carousels. If so, then you have to come back upstairs in order to get ground transport.

Romanian currency is LEI (or RON), not Euro, so you should get lei from a cash machine at the airport. Roughly, 1 Euro = 4.5 lei, and 1 US$ = 4.2 lei. For up-to-date rates for all currencies, check rates, but expect all banks and exchange offices to have their own exchange rates.
