1. Introduction

The localization of software products represents an important activity to be done, in Romania as in any other country, when lots of software products, most of them coming from the USA and the European Community, are offered on the local market.

Software products localization assumes a series of complex activities for the functional and user interface adaptation of those products, including the translation of the texts from the original language to the target language of the country for which the localization is done.

Most general purpose software products that are presently available on the market are conceived in such a way that they can be easily and efficiently localized for each specific local market. They are localized for a specific country by the software producer or by a local representative or a local distributor of the product.

Computer Sharing Bucharest provides software services for the implementation of enterprise management information systems, using for this purpose standard software packages in the area of business management, which are adapted to the specific requirements of each enterprise.

Initially, we used the software product IBM-ACG, while presently we are using BPCS ("Business Planning and Control System"), produced by SSA ("System Software Associates"), worldwide leader in the field of management information systems.

BPCS is a very complex product, including more than 50 components, which address the main enterprise level management requirements for the production, supplying and financial/accounting areas. At the same time, it represents a strong decision support tool for the enterprise top management.

Using such a software product assumes to make a large number of differently qualified and specialized users got acquainted with its functions, which enforces, as a mandatory requirement, the translation of the user interface into Romanian.

For both IBM-ACG and SSA BPCS, Computer Sharing Bucharest specialists have assured the localization for the specific requirements of the Romanian enterprises, including the translation from Italian and English respectively into Romanian.

While IBM-ACG was translated without any specialized translation tool, the localization of BPCS is presently done by means of TTT ("Text Translation Tool"), developed by Seagull Business Software (Holland), SSA business partner, that offers a performant environment for the efficient translation of BPCS or any other software product.

The use of such a specialized translation tool is imposed by the complexity of BPCS, which implies the necessity of translation of a very large amount of texts, and also by the necessity of continuous updating of the translation for the new versions of the product.
